Senate Moves Toward Final Vote on War Spending Bill

The Senate voted 97-0 today to limit debate on a $122 billion war spending bill that also sets a goal of withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he hoped to pass the bill (HR 1591) later today so House and Senate conferees would have two days to work on it before adjourning for spring recess.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., urged Republicans to vote for cloture so that they could move the bill expeditiously to President Bush, who has vowed to veto the bill if it contains expected language to require a troop withdrawal from Iraq.

“We’re going through an exercise here that’s going to ultimately lead to a vetoed bill, which does not get money to the troops,” McConnell said. “I think the sooner we can get this bill out of the Senate into conference, get the conference completed, get it down to the president for veto, we can get serious about passing a bill that will get money to the troops.”
