FBI Seeks Hill-to-Newspaper E-mails as Part of Abramoff Probe

Two Florida newspapers reported today that they have been asked for information about a local congressman who took part on one of lobbyist Jack Abramoff’s Scotland golf trips.

The St. Petersburg Times told readers the FBI has asked for e-mails the paper received from Jason Roe, a former chief of staff to Rep. Tom Feeney, R-Fla., in response to questions from the paper about Feeney’s 2003 trip.

The newspaper, owned by the parent company of Congressional Quarterly, said it referred the request to its attorneys.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that it was also asked for documents, but did not describe the request in detail.

The newspaper Florida Today reported Tuesday that the FBI asked it for copies of a tape recorded interview in which Feeney was asked about his connections with Abramoff.

The new attention on Feeney’s travel with Abramoff came as a former congressional aide pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy in the case. Mark Zachares, 48, entered his plea Tuesday. The Justice Department said Zachares has agreed to cooperate with the ongoing Abramoff probe as part of a plea agreement.
