The White House today accused Congress of dragging its feet on a $124.2 billion supplemental spending bill that includes disputed language calling for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.
“It’s now been passed for five days. We’re not quite sure why it’s been so difficult to convey it one mile up Pennsylvania Avenue, but we will get back to you when we know,” White House spokesman Tony Snow said.
Congress cleared the bill last week. The legislation was scheduled to arrive at the White House on Tuesday, and President Bush has promised a prompt veto.
Democrats had intended all along to deliver the legislation Tuesday because many lawmakers are in Los Angeles for the funeral of Rep.
Bush, for his part, has urged lawmakers to act quickly to send him a “clean” funding bill he can sign. The president’s Tuesday schedule includes attending an annual conference at U.S. Central Command headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.
House leaders say they will try a veto override as quickly as possible, but they lack the two-thirds majority needed to succeed. Senate leaders are not expected to try.
