House Likely to Consider Short-Term War Funding Bill This Week

House leaders are moving fast to write a short-term, $30.4 billion war supplemental that would force President Bush to return to Congress in July with a request for an additional $53 billion.

Bush vetoed a $124 billion fiscal 2007 supplemental funding measure (HR 1591) because it included a timetable for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. The House tried but failed to override his veto.

An aide to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the new bill likely would be on the House floor Thursday or Friday.

Republicans quickly assailed the plan. Democratic leaders “should not treat our men and women in uniform like they are children who are getting a monthly allowance,” said House Minority Leader John A. Boehner, R-Ohio.

Boehner noted that key Senate Democrats have voice opposition to the idea of passing a series of short-term funding measures for the war.
