Political Trivia for June 27
The wife of which president was nicknamed “Lemonade Lucy?’
a) Millard Fillmore
b) Rutherford B. Hayes
c) Benjamin Harrison
d) Calvin Coolidge
Answer: b) Lucy Webb Hayes was a strong supporter of the Temperance movement, and alcoholic beverages were barred from the White House during the one-term presidency of Ohio Republican Rutherford B. Hayes, who served from 1877-81. The first lady’s preference for serving soft drinks to visitors led the press to dub her “Lemonade Lucy.”
Mrs. Hayes, who also is credited with initiating the Easter egg roll on the White House lawn, was a highly popular figure in her time. She died in 1889 at age 57 and is buried in Fremont, Ohio, next to her husband, who died in 1893 at age 70.
