DHS Continues Threat Assessment Over Holiday

The Homeland Security Department reported Thursday it has received no credible threats so far to suggest a terrorist attack for the July Fourth holiday, but it is continuing to monitor for problems.

“Due to the symbolic importance of the holiday, the large number of mass gatherings and special events and increased travel associated with the celebrations, DHS and the FBI are reminding federal, state and local law enforcement entities and security personnel to remain vigilant,” said department spokeswoman Amy Kudwa.

Kudwa said local authorities and security personnel may increase their security precautions. She encouraged the public to report anything suspicious, including unattended bags, unattended vehicles in restricted areas or the use of cameras and recording devices at large public gatherings.

Coast Guard patrols will be increased but the department said they will address maritime safety due to increased boat traffic as much as security.

Additionally, the Transportation Security Administration’s Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response Program teams — squads of federal air marshals, surface transportation security inspectors, transportation security officers, behavior detection officers and canine teams that augment security at key transit facilities — will conduct operations over the holiday.
