What year was Tennessee frontiersman Davy Crockett first elected to Congress?
a) 1825
b) 1827
c) 1833
d) 1836
Answer: b) Crockett — dubbed “King of Wild Frontier” in a song that accompanied a popular 1950s TV show based on his legendary life — ran in a series of congressional elections then held in odd-numbered years in Tennessee, winning three times and losing three times.
He lost his first bid in 1825, but was elected in 1827 and 1829. Unseated in 1831, he came back to win one more term in 1833. After his final defeat in 1835, he relocated to Texas, became engaged in the territory’s fight to maintain its independence from Mexico, and at age 49 died with many others in the Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio.
An online biography of Crockett says he disliked the nickname “Davy” and always used his given name of David.
