Political Trivia for Aug. 11

How much did Colorado’s population grow between 1970 and 2006?

a) 35 percent

b) 63 percent

c) 91 percent

d) 115 percent

Answer: d) Like most Mountain West states, Colorado had a modest population not all that long ago, with 2,209,596 residents in 1970 according to the U.S. census taken that year. But the state’s population has boomed since, and the Census Bureau estimated its population at 4,753,377 as of 2006 — an increase of 115 percent since 1970 and more than 10 percent just since the 2000 census was performed.

As a result of the reapportionment that followed the 1970 census, Colorado’s U.S. House delegation grew from four seats to five. It gained another seat for a total of six after the 1980 census, and added a seventh seat after the 2000 census.

CQ Politics will provide live coverage Tuesday night of this year’s congressional primaries in Colorado, and will be in the state capital of Denver to provide live coverage of the Democratic National Convention that is being held Aug. 25-28.
