Supplemental Bill Contains $124.1 Billion in Funding

The first full draft of the emergency supplemental spending bill for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan totals $124.1 billion — $21.1 billion more than the president’s request, appropriations aides said Monday.

In addition to war spending, the measure includes money for relief from hurricanes and agriculture-related disasters and other items intended to help build support for the legislation.

President Bush requested $103 billion in war and hurricane-relief spending. He asked for $6.3 billion over the weekend for the current troop buildup in Iraq, military base realignment and other needs deemed urgent by the Pentagon — a total to be offset by cuts from his initial request and from domestic appropriations made in the fiscal 2007 continuing resolution.

The House Appropriations Committee plans to mark up the bill Thursday.
