Gore May Be Questioned More About Political Change Than Climate Change

Republicans aren’t planning to give Al Gore any award-winning treatment Wednesday during his testimony on climate change before House and Senate committees.

In fact, the former vice president is likely to get roughed up a bit by GOP lawmakers who believe that his Oscar-winning documentary about global warming, “An Inconvenient Truth,” is part of an effort supported by “Hollywood elitists” to help him launch another presidential bid.

“He honestly in his heart believes this is his ticket to the White House — to be able to be the leader on the issue of global warming,” said Sen. James M. Inhofe of Oklahoma, the ranking Republican on the Environment and Public Works Committee.

Inhofe was singled out in the documentary for calling concerns about global warming a “hoax.” He said he’s not expecting a “Gore-Inhofe shootout” at the committee hearing, but he acknowledged that he does plan to air his differences with the former vice president on the issue.

Gore’s presence at a joint hearing of the House Energy and Science subcommittees also may be a bit contentious. Republicans Joe L. Barton of Texas and J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois also have raised questions about Gore’s motives.
