113th Congress: Carol Shea-Porter, D-N.H. (1st District)

Reclaiming the seat she lost two years ago, Carol Shea-Porter will add to the House minority’s liberal complexion.

Shea-Porter says her top priorities will include jobs programs, including creation of a Veterans Jobs Corps that would help servicemembers transition into the civilian workforce. She also promises to oppose cuts in Medicare and Social Security, backs the 2010 health care law and supports federal infrastructure and economic stimulus spending.

Shea-Porter can be expected to support increases in funding for education programs and for low-income energy assistance. She backs efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and develop alternative energy sources, calling for an “Apollo-type program” to advance renewable energy.

Presenting herself as an advocate of low- and middle-income families, Shea-Porter has proposed allowing income tax rates to increase for those making more than $300,000. She would bolster Social Security’s financial foundation by increasing the amount of income subject to the payroll tax.

Shea-Porter, a supporter of public financing of campaigns, also proposes to put restrictions or disclosure requirements on campaign activity by super PACs and advocacy organizations.

She said she hopes to reclaim seats on the Armed Services, Education and the Workforce, and Natural Resources committees that she held in the 111th Congress.
