Mueller, 30, got his start in politics as a campaign aide to Rep. Jerry McNerney , a California Democrat, whom he joined in Washington as a legislative aide from 2007 to 2009. After that, Mueller was legislative director for Rep. Glenn Nye, a Virginia Democrat who served from 2009 to 2011 and was a member of the Armed Services Committee.

After Nye lost re-election in 2010 to Republican Scott Rigell , Mueller studied for a master’s degree in public policy at Georgetown University.
